Wednesday 5A 3-Nighter

Although there was an urban myth floating around that our popular 5A Swiss Pairs was being scored using cross-IMPs it has not been so. We really meant it to be but, due to a slight misunderstanding about how to set up our scoring program, the first four of six rounds have been scored using Butler. There was a brief period after the fourth round when the results were published after re-scoring with cross-IMPs but it was decided to revert to the Butler for the sake of continuity. Apologies to anyone whose feathers feel ruffled by this situation.

Waikato Area Pairs - final heat

This Sunday the final heat of the Waikato Area Pairs will be held at the Hamilton Bridge Club.

The event is a walk-in ... you don't need to register just turn up by 9.45 with your lunch, a partner and $10 to participate.

The 2020 WAP is a different beast - due to COVID we will have run just 3 heats and the overall winner will be decided by the best 2/3 scores (and while a sub is allowed - the two scores that count must be played with the same partnership).

The field is still wide open and you can see who is in contention via the following league ladder:

https://www.waikatobays.bridge-club.org/bcorg/results/showMultiResult?id...

Remember there are also A points up for grabs and prizes for the top non-open players in the field.

As is traditional we will also finish with some refreshments and nibbles (but don't expect the full pizza spread this year) as well as run the AGM at lunchtime.

If you have any suggestions/topics for discussion please send them to Anna (anna_kalma@hotmail.com) . As this is the last year Anna is managing the WAPs any nominations/volunteers to take over the event would also be appreciated.

NZ Congress 2020 - updated

Stop
URGENT MESSAGE - National Congress 2020

On Thursday 25 June the Management of the Distinction Hotel Hamilton advised New Zealand Bridge that they would not be honouring our booking for the 2020 National Congress. The venue is to be used as a quarantine facility for returning Kiwis until at least January 2021.

We will over the next 10 days look at options to relocate the Congress. This if at all possible, may be at a different time, and is likely not be in Hamilton.

At this point we ask that you hold off making any travel and accommodation bookings. Please don’t make any online entries or payments.

We are exceedingly disappointed with this situation and will do our absolute best to find a workable alternative for 2020.

Alister Stuck
National Secretary, New Zealand Bridge

Cashless Bridge - updated

The cashless system - Compa$$

Thank you to all the members who have paid in advance for their table money, either to the Directors or online - one member who shall remain nameless is expecting good things from his bridge this year and deposited $150. Thanks also to our Directors who received this small mountain. The good news is, they will not need to collect any more.

The amounts received are being credited to your Compass$$ accounts this week. We will be sending out an email after the end of the month when all the money received and session deductions made so far are detailed on your account. Please check it and let us know of any anomalies - being a new system, there is sure to be a couple. We are joining several bridge clubs in the Waikato region who are benefiting from this excellent addition to our existing scoring package. Please keep in mind that many hours have been spent setting up this system by club members giving up their leisure time plus the many many hours author Bob Fearn spent writing this innovative programme as well as the support he gives us with both Compass and Compass$$.
Any teething issues we are experiencing are due to Dave and myself learning to understand the process of implementing this new programme, introduced in order to improve the club's procedures and members' enjoyment.

As a reminder, all you need to do in the future is to transfer an amount to the club's bank account - 01 0315 0381282 01 - or pay to Donna during office hours.

•   staying away if you have Covid19 or flu-like symptoms or if you have a cold
•   washing your hands with soap and water
•   avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

In addition the committee has provided:
1.   a Health table - tissues and hand sanitisers will be positioned on a table in the centre of playing tables.
Players are required to move away from the playing table if they are anticipating sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose,
use the tissues that have been supplied, place the used tissue in the receptacle at the table and re-sanitise your hands
before returning to your playing table

All players please bring notes to purchase a set of table tickets - $10 for 3 tickets ( limit of 2 sets )
The club will shortly be moving to a system where members will pay their table money on-line (or through the Secretary)
Table money for each session you play will then be automatically deducted from your personal Compass account each time
your computer number is entered for a session into the Bridge Mate

2. Sets of boards used will be set aside for at least 3 days before they are dealt again

3. The Covid Tracing App QR Code will be available for members to use to record their personal movements

4. The kitchen will be open for Tea & Coffee - members will be required to sanitise their hands before entering the kitchen

First visit to the Club – ALL members are required to check that their personal details the Club has for you are correct
There is still a recommended Covid tracing requirement for clubs to follow

Have a great time returning to the tables

Survey Results

The Club would like to thank all members who completed last weeks survey

We had 121 responses to the survey from the 220 odd email addresses of club members we have - an around 45% response. If you consider only around 200 of our 270 members actually play bridge at all during the year this response level climbs to 60%. Thank you also to the 40 odd members who provided feedback commenting on the questions. Most organisers of surveys would be overjoyed with this level of response so well done all !

From the results it is obvious that, although many members are enjoying playing on BBO, they are very keen to get back to both see and play bridge with their friends and other members

Hamilton Bridge Club suspension of bridge - Updated 22 April

Hello All

We are now four weeks into our self-isolations within our respective bubbles. The Bridge Club committee trusts that all members and their bubbles are safe and well. At our online meeting yesterday, we discussed possible ways forward to enable some form of regular bridge to be played safely at the club when more social options become available. To this end, we are keeping in touch with NZBridge and will follow their recommendations based on Ministry of Health advice. This means the Club will remain closed for the period of Level 3 when we will again report back to members.

There are many opportunities to play Bridge online – BBO have kiwi sessions each afternoon and night and WaikatoBays are arranging sessions for Waikato and Bay of Plenty members to join together for an afternoon or evening of Bridge. Check the WaikatoBays website for more details and instructions if you have not yet played on line. It is like most things - very easy once you know how.

On Line Bridge – BBO

As many of you likely know there are numerous games of NZ organised bridge taking place on BBO ranging from pseudo tournaments run by Auckland Bridge to smaller sessions hosted by other clubs to private games. Waikato-Bays (our regional bridge group) has taken a lead here in the Waikato organising and running what have become daily bridge sessions using BBO.

Many of these sessions are aimed at junior and intermediate players in the region so don’t be put off thinking you will be playing against open players - dependent on numbers, more qualified players requests may be declined.

Should you be interested, there are detailed instructions on the
Waikato Bays site - https://www.waikatobays.bridge-club.org/node/1099 on how to register and access these sessions/tournaments. To be able to play in these events you need two things – a partner and you need to pre-register with Waikato Bays - details can be found on the Waikato Bays site on how to accomplish both of these tasks.
If you would like to know more about BBO and playing online these are both good resources to start with -

Payment of Club Subscriptions

Our subs were due on the last day of February but as at the end of March about 22% , some 60 odd members, have still to pay!

We know that times are not easy at present with no bridge and in some cases probably worse things are happening but the Club is also suffering. We still have our fixed overheads to pay along with commitments made in the days before the word Covid-19 existed and none of us had heard “lockdown” being used

So please, can you pay your outstanding subs as soon as possible

Apologies to those who have paid since the end of March but without access to the club building we may be a little out of date

Thank you

Prue Butler

In what is a very sad week for the Club we also sadly note the passing of our member Prue Butler. Prue has been a member on and off starting playing back at the time of the construction of our current building. She then took an extended break coming back to surprise us all as an Intermediate graded player.
Prue was on the committee for a period helping a lot with the catering at the club. Outside the club this "helping" continued into the local community especially with refugee families. She was ever practical and she is sadly missed by her family and a wide circle of friends. The Club extends our sympathy to Prue's family and friends.
