A very Successful Weekend

Saturday saw the Hamilton Club run the 10A Hamilton Open Teams which was very well supported by 25 teams from around the top half of the North Island. Running out the winners were the McGann team - Hugh McGann, Michael Ware, Tom Jacob, Steph Jacob by a rather comfortable 21 VPs over the 2nd placed Boughey team. Hamilton members were to be found across the top 4 teams. There was some very close bridge with the Chen team - Yuzhong Chen, James Yang, Herman Yuan, John Wang who missed being in second place by 0.01 VPs - this close run competition continued for the next few placings

While the Open players were contesting the Teams event 34 pairs took part in the Hamilton Intermediate Pairs. Winners on the day were the Taupo Pair of Frances Rankin & Derek Rankin followed by Judith Howard & Joanne Swanwick from Matamata
Top Hamilton Pairs were Catherine Cameron & Trini Lin in 4th place and Bruce Cresswell & Vaughan Samuelson in 5th. The majority of the players in this event were from the Waikato / Bays area but it was nice to see two pairs from New Plymouth competing

Hamilton's Karen Harper & Carissa Oliver - Top Juniors in the Intermediate Pairs

Inter-Provincial Teams

What are The Inter-Provincials or as they are more commonly known the IPs ?

The IPs are a teams competition in which the 7 NZ "Bridge Regions" ( Auckland-Northland, Waikato-Bays, Central Districts, Wellington, Top of the South, Canterbury & Otago-Southland ) complete against one another
These competitions take place in 4 different "grades" - Open, Intermediate, Women & Seniors with the overall winner being the the Region with the most points from the events in the 4 different grades

The overall winner is awarded the Dougal McLean Trophy which for the past 3 years has been held by the Wellington region

Again in mid November battle commences in Christchurch over 3 days were the regions will challenge each other with the aim of being the best!

Waikato Bays held trials recently in Tauranga with the result that these Hamilton Bridge Club members qualified for the inter-provincial teams :

Senior     -   Ella Gray and Michael Neels
Open      -   Yuzhong Chen and Noel Grigg
Women   -   Jenna Gibbons

Chef de Mission (CDM) for Waikato-Bays for the event is Jenny Millington
